Moonstone is a variety of orthoclase that is opalescent with a blue or white shimmer similar to the glow of the moon. The shimmer is caused by light reflection from the internal structure consisting of an intergrowth of albite and orthoclase feldspar. Thin layers of albite give the beautiful blue color; thick layers give a white shimmer. Sometimes moonstones have a so-called cat's eye effect that increases the value of the stone.
