Malachite is a very popular green gemstone. Its name is believed to have come from the Greek word, "malache" which means "mallow", as the color of malachite is similar to the color of mallow leaf. Malachite is used both as a source of copper and as a gemstone. It often occurs with azurite in copper deposits. Malachite often has very distinctive concentric bands in varying shades of green, which make it an interesting gemstone. Malachite has a hardness of 3.5-4 and due to its relative softness it is often cabochon cut.
