Demantoid Garnet (Ganet) is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. This stone was first discovered in the Russian Ural Mountains in 1855. The name Demantoid comes from the German word Demant (diamond-like) because Demantoid has a luster that is even better than Diamonds! One of the most famous characteristics of a Demantoid Garnet is the so-called Horsetail Inclusions. Many Demantoid Garnet stones have small inclusions that have the same shape as a horse's tail. Many believe that a Demantoid Garnet must have an enclosure like this to be a true Demantoid, but this is completely wrong. There are more Demantoid Garnets that have little or no inclusions in one than there are stones with these Horestail Inclusions. Today, not much Russian material is found anymore, which makes genuine Russian Demantoid Garnet even more valuable. Much of the material on the market now is of slightly lower quality from Namibia.
